چکیده

Predation is a major selective force structuring biological communities and causing the evolution of defenses in many prey organisms. While permanent defenses evolve under constant predation pressure, inducible defenses are adaptations to heterogeneity in predation risk [1] and likely evolved under divergent selection regimes. Costs for the production or maintenance of defenses are saved during times when these defenses are not required. A fascinating aspect of the study of inducible defenses is that organisms with the same genotype can display drama ti cally different phenotypes in response to par ticular environmental factors that are required for activat ing genes that control the formation of these defenses. The interplay of genes and environment is far from being fully understood, above all since the genes and regulatory pathways have not been identified in most systems. The question whether ‘plasticity genes’ or inter actions between multiple loci regulate plasticity, is an unresolved question (for example, [2]). Inducible defenses evolved in a range of evolutionarily diverse organisms from bacteria to vertebrates [1], but waterfleas (Daphnia), small planktonic crustaceans, are particularly famous for their large variety of spectacular inducible defenses. These inducible defenses include prominent morpho logical changes preventing capture [3,4], adaptive shifts in body size contrasting predator’s preysize selectivity [5], depthselection behavior [6] to spectacular pheno mena such as vertical migration where tons of zoo plankton avoid predator encounters by changing their position in a diurnal rhythm.

The ecology and evolution of inducible defenses.

Inducible defenses are responses activated through a previous encounter with a consumer or competitor that confer some degree of resistance to subsequent attacks. While the importance of inducible resistance has long been known in host-parasite interactions, it is only recently that its importance has emerged in other natural systems. Although the structural defenses produced by invertebrates t...

Poor phenotypic integration of blue mussel inducible defenses in environments with multiple predators

Aquatic prey encounter an array of threat cues from multiple predators and killed conspecifics, yet the vast majority of induced defenses are investigated using cues from single predator species. In most cases, it is unclear if odors from multiple predators will disrupt defenses observed in single-predator induction experiments. We experimentally compared the inducible defenses of the common ma...

Inducible defenses in prey intensify predator cannibalism.

Trophic cascades are often a potent force in ecological communities, but abiotic and biotic heterogeneity can diffuse their influence. For example, inducible defenses in many species create variation in prey edibility, and size-structured interactions, such as cannibalism, can shift predator diets away from heterospecific prey. Although both factors diffuse cascade strength by adding heterogene...

Induced Plant Defense: Evolution of Induction and Adaptive Phenotypic Plasticity

Induced defenses may evolve in natural plant populations where heritable variation in inducibility affects plant fitness. Although this has not been documented for any plant – parasite system, genetic variation in induction has been recently reported for several plant-parasite systems. Correlations between induction and fitness in variable parasite environments suggest that inducibility may ind...

Inducible Defenses with a "Twist": Daphnia barbata Abandons Bilateral Symmetry in Response to an Ancient Predator.

Predation is one of the most important drivers of natural selection. In consequence a huge variety of anti-predator defenses have evolved in prey species. Under unpredictable and temporally variable predation pressure, the evolution of phenotypically plastic defensive traits is favored. These "inducible defenses", range from changes in behavior, life history, physiology to morphology and can be...
